Food for Thought Faculty Day at Santa Monica College

Santa Monica CollegeNourish was shown as part of a kickoff event at Santa Monica College to inspire faculty and staff for the college’s Global Citizenship theme of food. The daylong “Food for Thought” program included a screening of Nourish, workshops, a resource fair, networking, and nutritious meals.

Faculty discussed integrating the work of authors such as Michael Pollan, whose book The Omnivore’s Dilemma has been come essential reading on college campuses, into the SMC’s programs.

Dana Morgan, of the English department, facilitated the Nourish screening discussion. “I was introduced to the film at a Center for Ecoliteracy seminar for teachers last summer and was very impressed with the positive attitude toward making a difference by what we eat,” she said. Faculty left with plenty of fresh ideas for bringing food and sustainability into their coursework.

Morgan has used Nourish with her freshman English composition students to give them background on food issues in advance of writing an essay exam on the topic of processed food. “This film is well suited to first-year college students,” she said.
