Celebrating School Food Festival in Santa Cruz
The Central Coast School Food Alliance, in conjunction with National School Food Week, held a Celebrating School Food Festival to showcase Santa Cruz County’s innovative school food program, which offers nutritious, locally prepared meals to K-6 students throughout its districts.
The Food Alliance partnered with more than a dozen local organizations, such as farmers markets, food banks, and school garden programs, to present an action-packed afternoon. The festival provided information for educators and parents, a food-themed art contest for kids, and a screening of Nourish. School nutritionists and food directors offered tastings of some of the healthy lunch and breakfast creations being served at Santa Cruz schools.
Local Congressman Sam Farr and Assemblyman Bill Monning provided opening remarks for the screening of Nourish. Farr, who has been a leader in organic food legislation, praised the county’s strides in school food: “This is a revolution. And it’s starting right here,” Farr said.
The festival offered parents, students, and educators an opportunity to mobilize and connect, along with tools and inspiration to spread the school food revolution throughout Santa Cruz and beyond.
